During the Fall 2015 semester I was given the opportunity to intern at DiscoverTec, a local Jacksonville SEO and web design firm. I was in-charge of their social media accounts while also creating new sites for clients to use.
Over the past four months I have learned a lot about SEO and social media. To my surprise there is much more that goes into a post than just the visual appearance – what time of day generates the maximum amount of traffic, how many hashtags are appropriate, caption usage, etc. The DiscoverTec Marketing Team allowed me to be independent and gave me free-range on the sites – making sure to follow company standards and evenly spreading out my time and work among each of the social accounts: Google+, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram. I was also given the opportunity to create a Medium, Contently and Shocase site where I moved content from our original blog to these sites and posted new content to them as well.
Although my main focus was running the social accounts for DiscoverTec I also worked on research for the company. I used this time to create blog article topics for clients, learned about new products and services to benefit the company and consistently looked into new ways to not only boost our presence on the web but our clients as well.
Overall, my time at DiscoverTec was very well spent; through this internship I was able to freely express my ideas in a professional environment. I was given the opportunity to be mentored by the entire Marketing Team while also receiving hands-on experience with clients – I assisted with a commercial shoot for Rayonier Inc. where I met and helped interview the CEO, CFO, Senior Vice President and Director of Communications. My experience at DiscoverTec has given me the tools needed to continue my education in communication and has furthered my passion for advertising and design.
